Our June Book: The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni
The Novel Nurse Book Club is excited to feature The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell, a heartfelt and uplifting novel that follows one boy’s journey of resilience, identity, and acceptance. Robert Dugoni tells the story of Sam Hill—nicknamed “Sam Hell” by classmates because of his rare eye condition—with warmth, humor, and emotional depth. This coming-of-age story explores the power of family, friendship, and faith as Sam navigates a world that doesn’t always make room for people who are different.
Why This Book Is Perfect for Nurses
Nurses will appreciate the novel’s intimate look at what it means to truly see people—beyond labels, diagnoses, or first impressions. The book beautifully highlights themes of empathy, perseverance, and the quiet strength that shapes a person’s life path. Sam’s journey encourages us to reflect on our own experiences with adversity and the ways we support others through theirs, both at the bedside and beyond.
