Our November Book: Sparrow’s Song by Marilee Aufdenkamp
The Novel Nurse Book Club is excited to announce our November selection, Sparrow’s Song by Nebraska author and nurse Marilee Aufdenkamp!
Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Nebraska and two World Wars, Sparrow’s Song follows Kathryn Scheibel, a young woman from a German-Russian immigrant family who leaves behind factory work to pursue an education in nursing. Her journey takes her from the Army School of Nursing during World War I to a career as a nurse educator during World War II and the Cadet Nurse Corps.
Through Kathryn’s story, readers explore themes of nursing history, women’s education, immigration, family, identity, perseverance, racism, and professional growth. The novel offers a fascinating look at how nursing has evolved while highlighting many of the challenges and opportunities that have shaped the profession.
A Special Connection to Novel Nurse
This book holds an especially meaningful connection for our group: Marilee Aufdenkamp is a member of the Nebraska Nurses Association and one of our NNA committee members!
We are thrilled that Marilee will be joining the Novel Nurse Book Club in November for a special conversation about Sparrow’s Song, her inspiration for the story, the historical research behind the novel, and her experience transitioning from nurse to novelist.
Her firsthand perspective will make this a very special Novel Nurse gathering!
